What Have We Got to Moan About? ; Letters & Opinion

Summary

SINCE Ellen Moss is sick of people in Derby complaining about everything (Letters, April 19) may I say how delighted I am that plans are afoot to place a modern multi-storey hotel block next to the Cathedral? The Cathedral will benefit from having its brickwork protected from the sun by being in the hotel's shadow, as has been proved so successfully with the residents of Darley Lane next to Jury's Inn hotel. The architecture will be sympathetic to its surroundings, just like the Quad, Jury's, the bus station and the Westfield centre, which we all love, don't we? As has been seen with St Paul's Cathedral, in London, Derby Cathedral will eventually be surrounded by buildings, with only one decent view available, ie, St Mary's Gate. This view will attract many visitors to Bold Lane and help boost the economy of the kebab shop on Cheapside.

I am glad to see that our city partnerships and architects have the good sense to acknowledge the fact that, since Derby has a similar level of tourist attractions to London and Edinburgh, it is necessary to have a similar number of hotels per square mile as these fine cities, and it can only bring us prestige, international acclaim and much prosperity through our carefully thought-out bus, road and parking amenities.
