VETERANS and former soldiers are backing Government plans to create a separate crime of showing disrespect to war memorials. At present police can press charges for vandalism or, in cases where people have urinated on memorials, outraging public decency.
But MPs are calling for a separate crime of "desecrating the memories of this country" which would give war memorials special protection and mean tougher sentences for people who deliberately show disrespect. John Jennings, chairman of the Allenton War Memorial Village and a former soldier, said he backed the plans.See the full content of this document
