'Town Ditch' Is in Wrong Location

Summary


In his letter of Tuesday, April 28, under the heading, "We told you so on bathing pool," Maxwell Craven states: "We also correctly predicted that the archaeologists would find the medieval town ditch near here two years ago, and it is gratifying to be proved right again!"

From information passed to me by the County Archaeologist following the discovery I would doubt that the ditch is a "town ditch" as its location and direction would make it impracticable either for defence or as a boundary. It is more likely to be the ditch referred to by Robert Simpson in his 1826 work, A Collection of Fragments Ulustrative of the History and Antiquities of Derby.
