LESLIE Grantham has just picked up the news about Bombardier and, like everyone in Derby, is angered and frustrated by the effects of a Government contract decision on our trainmaker. "It must be very depressing for the poor people of Derby, with jobs going at Bombardier and Egg," says the actor known to millions for his two stints as Dirty Den in TV soap EastEnders. "It's crazy, this world we are living in. Our economy is in turmoil, our industry is in turmoil, yet no-one backs our own industries, we chuck it away.

"We are the only ones who toe the line. We are the only country who does what the EU tells us. The results are that all these jobs go in Derby in one day. We should wake up and smell the coffee. I do get passionate about it, when I think about the industries in places like Derby and you wonder what will be left. It will only be Costa coffee shops.
