Academies are still a relatively new concept. They first opened in 2002, in a drive to replace failing comprehensives in the poorest areas of England.
In exchange for a financial commitment of up to pounds2m, businesses or organisations were able to take control of an academy, including setting its ethos, appointing governors and hiring staff.See the full content of this document
