It would be a display of arrogant indifference of such monumental proportion that it seems almost impossible to contemplate the possibility that MPs will vote themselves a pay rise above the rate of inflation.

The Prime Minister says they should not do so. Unions representing public service workers such as the police and health workers, who bitterly resent their pay offers, are adamant they should not do so.
