Organisers of Strikes ' Totally 'Irresponsible', Claims Osborne

Summary

CHANCELLOR George Osborne has used this week's Conservative Party conference to accuse unions of being "irresponsible" in planning strikes over pensions.

He told his fellow party members that the coalition Government was reforming public sector pensions so they were "generous" to public servants and also fair to taxpayers. He said: "Let me say this to the unions - to go on strike in economic times like this, when you're being offered pensions far more generous than most other people could ever afford, will hit growth, will cost jobs. It is totally irresponsible." Meanwhile, the Government is looking at a suggestion from the Local Government Association (LGA), the body which represents the country's councils, on how the 3.2% increase in contributions can be achieved. The LGA says the Pounds 900 million savings needed through public sector pensions reform can be met through raising the normal pension age from 65 to 66 from April 2014. It would also see contribution increases on a sliding scale, with public sector workers paid the highest wages, seeing the biggest rise.
