Summary


People who know him say that Mr Speaker Martin is personally a kind man and watching him at bay in the Commons had more than a whiff of blood sports about it.

The plain fact is that he never was up to the job and should have been found something else to do after his first Parliament. He never grew into it and never commanded that sort of respect and affection enjoyed by Betty Boothroyd or George Thomas - two others not exactly out of the social top drawer.
