Summary
STRIKER Steve Davies is beginning to show some of his best form in a Derby County shirt, according to manager Nigel Clough, but has another big summer ahead of him. Davies is enjoying his longest run of starts in the first team since he signed from Tranmere Rovers almost three years ago. The 23-year-old is set to make his sixth consecutive start for the Rams against Championship leaders Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Monday. His previous best run was four starts. Davies has been plagued by injuries during his time at Pride Park but Clough felt the player's display in Tuesday's victory over Leeds United was physically his strongest since he returned from a serious knee injury at the end of December.
"It was a very good centreforward's performance," said Clough, who believes Davies' progress could bode well for next season. Davies returned early for pre-season training last summer in a bid to get himself in tip-top shape but he suffered a major setback when he damaged cruciate ligaments in his knee before the season kicked off. "Steven has to work again during the summer, which, to be fair to him, he did last summer before he got injured," said Clough. "He also needs a good preseason under his belt and then we will know if he is going to be a player. "We know he has an awful lot of ability, he just needs to get fully fit." Davies signed a new oneyear extension to his contract in February, which takes him to June 2012.See the full content of this document
