AT the beginning of the month, the General Assembly of the United Nations was thronged; every seat on the floor and in the public gallery was taken to hear an 84-year-old lady make a short speech which received a standing ovation. The same lady went on in the sweltering New York heat to visit Ground Zero. It was, of course, the Queen.
Highly respected in the wider world, she has been very shabbily treated here by the press on the expenses of her office. The Government pays her the Civil List money of Pounds 7.9 million for the costs of discharging her office whilst the actual cost is nearly double at Pounds 14.2 million.See the full content of this document
