Summary


I Am not in the least surprised by the latest calls to demolish the Hippodrome (Evening Telegraph, October 14). But I believe that people signing the petition have been misled by individuals with a personal interest and who have no respect for Derby's listed buildings policy. To my knowledge Mr Saunders has never complained about the owner of the Hippodrome or blamed him for its condition.

There is a misconception that the building has been in a state of disrepair for ten years or more, however this is utter nonsense. I remember the building undergoing considerable renovation work in 2004 when all of the outside terra cotta tiles were replaced and roof repairs carried out. The building was in good condition when it was sold over the heads of local theatre groups who were hoping to buy it in 2007.
