One of the most memorable events of 1981 was at the end of July when Derbeians threw themselves into national celebrations for the eagerly-anticipated Royal Wedding of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer.

But the celebrations were not without their complications. A spate of flag thefts across the city necessitated last-minute decorating rethinks for many.
