Producer Claire Ingham, of the Castle Gresley company, said: "Things are quite difficult at the moment because budgets are getting smaller and smaller.
"Films are seen as a high-risk investment but, hopefully, in 2009 things will be different."Red Room has a film in development, called Stratford Road - written by Helen Cross, known for the novel My Summer of Love, which was made into the film of the same name.GRANWAX PRODUCTSWOODEN flooring specialist Granwax sees trade holding up despite problems in the housing market.The Riddings firm provides hardwood flooring for domestic and commercial premises.National technical support manager Nick Peters said: "The high- end domestic market should be OK and there will be commercial work at sports centres starting up in 2009."I believe there's a lot of work that needs to be done and I am reasonably confident about next year."You've got to remain optimistic and I'm sure that things will come good."BOWMER AND KIRKLANDIN contrast to so many in the construction industry, John Kirkland, chairman of the Bowmer and Kirkland Group, is cautiously optimistic about 2009 and beyond.He said: "Our involvement in enhancing opportunities for the youth of our region is one thing that gives me hope for the future."We will complete the renovation of the historic Roundhouse for Derby College in March and this will provide an inspiring learning facility for many students."We will continue to invest in our excellent staff, our most important resource, and develop new products and companies, such as B&K Timber Structures, which recently won the Business Innovation of the Year Award."MANTHORPE GROUPTHERE is mixed news from the Ripley-based Manthorpe Group regarding its prospects.Manthorpe Engineering has invested in its manufacturing facilities and training through apprenticeships.Managing director Paul Pochciol believes that it is in a strong position to capitalise on any business opportunities in the UK and overseas.He said: "By focusing on high-end engineering, we feel that, while we are not immune to the effects of the current recession, we are in a better position than many to ride out the current uncertainties and emerge strongly when the world economy improves."The health of sister company Manthorpe Building Products is not as robust.Mr Pochciol said: "In common with all companies in this sector, it is feeling the effects of the downturn in the housebuilding market."We do not expect to see an improvement in this side of the business until there is some positive and effective action to stimulate the housing market."ELEY METROLOGY...See the full content of this document
