1 COOPER RESEARCH TECHNOLOGY Profits were up a couple of per cent at the Ripley firm that designs and builds equipment to test road materials. A Pounds 500,000 order from Algeria was a highlight, the firm bought a Chesterfield engineering company and set up a business to market ancillary products alongside its machinery. Managing director Peter Grafton said: "We did good business in India, Russia and Japan and continue to target Africa and the Middle East.

"There are new machines and we will have a go at the US market too."

2 QUADRALENE The business in Bateman Street, Derby, experienced double-digit growth in 2011. It produces cleaning, disinfection and infection-control products for the healthcare and industrial sectors.
