LOCAL: The Bishop of Derby, the Right Rev Geoffrey Allen, said he was "disappointed" that the scheme for unity between the Anglican and Methodist churches had failed. He called for continued work towards an ultimate union. SPORT: Derby County firmly denied that they were trying to sign striker Alan Birchenall from Chelsea. Assistant manager Peter Taylor said: "We have two players very much in mind at the moment but Birchenall is definitely not one of them." WORLD: Actress Marianne Faithfull, girlfriend of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, was admitted to hospital in Sydney, Australia, after collapsing in a hotel.
