IT was a fellow pupil at Bemrose Grammar School who first set Derek Hull off on what turned out to be a lifetime of musical enjoyment. Derek was first introduced to the cello by sixth-form student David Clark-Maxwell. He said: "David, whose family home is now the Mackworth Hotel, encouraged me and even loaned me an instrument. He was a very well spoken young gentleman.

"I remember sitting upstairs in my home on Stenson Road practising." Another influential person in Mr Hull's early musical years was Derby Youth Orchestra's Jean Borsley who helped to teach him the French horn.
