Samuel Clegg, 1871-1930: Founder and headmaster of Long Eaton School, Clegg gave his life to education. A lover of art and nature, he received national acclaim for his writings. He was also grandfather of Sir Richard and Sir David Attenborough.

Joseph Austin, 1808-1886: Originally a coal merchant and boat owner, he built the first tenement lace factory in Long Eaton in 1856. The factory began the development of the town as the country's foremost lace manufacturing centre.
