FOR many years, the Woodhouse family were extremely well known for their contributions to boxing.

The elder brothers started showing an interest in the early part of the last century by attending the YMCA club. Most of the brothers had experience in the professional ring to different degrees. Frank was by far the best, a Midlands champion.

Grandparents Jack and Mary. Market Business for Which the Family Was Already Well Known.

The story goes that Frank had travelled up to Sheffield to fight and his father, Jack, had gone along in support.

Unfortunately, Frank lost the fight. On the way back on the train to Derby, Frank asked his dad if he had won. His father, concerned for his son's well being, took his boxer's licence off him and tore it up. It is understood that he also stopped Joe in the early years.
