IN 1978, I met Ferenc Puskas, a leading light of the Hungary national football team of the 1950s dubbed the Magical Magyars and a man considered to be one of the finest footballers of all time. I knew the names of a few Hungarian football clubs, Ferencvaros, Honved, Ujpesti Dozsa. I had a very basic knowledge of the Hungarian uprising of 1956.

In other words, as we waited to board our flight from East Midlands Airport to Budapest, I had to accept that my level of my ignorance on Hungary was truly appalling.
