A HISTORY-LOVER paid Pounds 744 at auction for a letter from former Derby nurse Florence Nightingale . It was written in 1883 and refers to her efforts to improve the cleanliness of water in India.

Miss Nightingale, who worked at the former Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, was raised at Lea Hurst, a country mansion near Ripley. She is regarded as the founder of modern nursing after treating soldiers in the Crimean War.
