SETTING out on a bit of a railway adventure, I was determined to learn new things all the way.

So when on Derby Station I saw a young man with "I sold my hair for medical research" written on his Tshirt, I approached him. "In the bad old days of the 60s," I said, "when marginal taxes were 90%, a close relative of mind was found to have a 'Baghdad sore'. Charabancs of medical students were brought in to see it."
