Faith Files

Summary

I Love history. I love poring over old books, reading things that haven't been read for years, unearthing secrets from the past. It's like being a detective. Spending the last two years researching the Baptists of Derbyshire has been very enjoyable. It has also been a very sobering experience, because the history of religious dissent in this country is the history of persecution, discrimination and eventually reluctant and hard-won toleration. Baptist ministers in the late 17th century were frequently fined, imprisoned or deprived of their goods. It was against the law to worship as your conscience dictated.

Thankfully the world moves on. Centuries of campaigning has brought us to a position where religion can be practised freely and openly. We no longer have to meet in secret for fear of the authorities. But, despite the legal freedoms that we all enjoy today, there is still a great lack of understanding about religion in general. Most of us would admit that we don't understand Sikh, Hindu or Muslim faith, nor some of the different expressions of the Christian faith.
