I HAVE always liked Friday nights. It's that wonderful mix of payday, the promise of the weekend to come and that sense that, however tired you are, this is the time to go out and enjoy yourself.

So, not much has changed in just over 100 years. Back in 1894, a walk along Canal Street, which runs from London Road to Siddals Road, would have offered you the chance to take in three pubs and two beer shops, which were, I guess, the likely haunts of my great- grandparents, for little else can explain how, late on a Friday night, full of alcohol, they chose to fight the police.
