The culprit was the Rams' Albert Mays and the opponents were Preston North End, then one of the best teams in English football.

The result was a draw. And Derby lost the replay. But the main point was that, in January 1959, it was also a performance that underlined just how far Derby County had come since the desperate times of only a few years earlier.
