Summary

BORN on October 28, 1911, the organisation known as the Old Derbeian Society (OD Society) was launched publicly and began its first 100 years of existence.

The society was formed to foster the memory of the old Derby School, based originally in St Peter's Churchyard and then at both St Helen's House in King Street, Derby, and at the Moorway Lane School complex in Littleover. Why such a body had never officially existed before is not recorded in our archives as Derby School started its existence more than 800 years ago, some time in the 12th century, around 1160 in the reign of King Henry II, when the school was closely associated with Darley Abbey. It then continued after the abolition of the abbey in 1538 and its second phase commenced in 1554 when the school was re-founded with a charter granted by Queen Mary. The first public and official function of the Old Derbeian Society was held on the evening of Saturday, October 28, 1911, with a Smoking Concert held in the dining hall within St Helen's House on King Street.
