I JOINED ICL in 1950, initially as an industrial chemist after a short spell in a soap works and then in LMS laboratories in Calvert Street. I soon realised that I much preferred metallurgy and, despite continuing to train and be a racing cyclist with the Derby Mercury, eventually re-qualified as a metallurgist via Derby Technical College.

On my first day with the firm, in early 1950, I was told there was no analytical work needed so would I help in the Met Lab? I was shown how to mount and polish a metallurgical sample, which entailed holding the sample on a rotating polishing wheel for many minutes. After a few minutes, a funny little man, wearing a long rain coat came up to me and said: "What are you doing, sonny?" "Polishing a sample," was my response.
