I'M not a resident of Elvaston or Derbyshire myself. I actually live in Warrington. I was driving back from Nottingham the other week with my family when we stumbled across Elvaston Castle, looking for somewhere nice to stop. Then to my horror I recently discovered that there are plans to "privatise" the site and turn it into a hotel and golf course, which is a terrible shame. Elvaston Castle is one of the prettiest and most lovely, peaceful places I have ever visited and I just wanted to say that I completely support what the "Friends of Elvaston" are trying to do. It would be a great shame if such a lovely place was taken away from the public and restricted to private access only.
We in Warrington have faced similar issues over the past few years. Walton Hall and Gardens was to be taken over by a hotel but was then thankfully saved through public support. Also the lesser- known Bewsey Old Hall which has also fell into disrepair has been sold to a company who are planning on turning it into "60s-style apartments" and sadly they seem to have won the war on this one. I just think it's so sad that some of our country's most beautiful heritage is being sold down the river like this.See the full content of this document
