National: The popular Rhodesian resort town of Victoria Falls, which lies across the Zambesi River from Zambia, which President Kenneth Kaunda had placed on a war footing, came under mortar fire for about 30 minutes. Shells landed near the luxurious Elephant Hills Hotel causing slight damage.

LOCAL: Derby bus travellers were facing an increase in fares, which could add from 1p to 4p to the cost of a journey. Adults, children's and pensioners' fares were all expected to be affected.
