Before members were able to see the display and buy, they enjoyed a talk about The Apolo Project in Bolivia. The project is based in a rural village in Bolivia called Apolo, 12 hours' drive north of La Paz.

OPTICIANS in Derby have backed a petition calling for police to be given powers to ban unfit drivers on the spot. Staff at Specsavers, in Normanton, have said they want to see the introduction of Cassie's Law, a petition for which currently has more than 10,000 names.

Home Tests Find Early Signs of Bowel Cancer in 1,171 People
MORE than a thousand Derbyshire people were investigated for bowel cancer in nine months last year - after having early signs picked up by home testing kits. Between January and September last year, 1,171 people between 60 and 75 showed possible symptoms after taking the simple tests.

PUPILS at a Derby school put themselves and their friends to the test when they took part in an internal competition to choose their favourite book. Youngsters in two forms at Derby High School each chose a book and tried to persuade their friends that it was the best one for their year group.

DRUGS which help treat stroke patients by getting rid of blood clots will be available seven days a week at Burton's Queen's Hospital. At present, specialists are available from Monday to Friday, 7am to 8pm, to give patients thrombolytic drugs.
Bailiff Action Over Unpaid Council Tax
TWENTY-SEVEN people living in Erewash risk a visit from a bailiff after failing to pay council tax. Chris Neal, recovery team leader at Erewash Borough Council, told Southern Derbyshire magistrates that the 27 owe a total of Pounds 7,975 from this year's council tax.
'Change Needed' to Make Pupils Employable
A DERBYSHIRE business leader has written to ministers calling for changes to the way schools and colleges prepare their students for the world of work. In the letter, which has been sent to Business Secretary Vince Cable and Education Secretary Michael Gove, Ian Greenaway, president of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, claims that too many schoolleavers lack the attitude and skills needed by businesses.

A PETITION has been launched by residents in a bid to get Tesco to start building its new store in Allenton. Construction work on the store, which was granted planning permission last July, has not yet begun. It includes the demolition of a row of derelict homes next to the site, where the Mitre pub once stood.
Tenants Form Action Group to Rid Flats of Mess and Noise Caused by Drunk Vandals
TENANTS at a block of flats have formed a residents' association to tackle nuisance teenagers who use staircases for drinking, smoking and vandalism. People living at Brindley Court, in Alvaston, say they are fed up with the noise and mess left by "trespassers". In a recent incident, about 30 youths descended on the building and held a party in its staircases and corridors, leaving behind bottles and beer cans. Some urinated on the walls.
As Record Number of Strays Taken in Council Urges That Dogs Are Chipped
A RECORD number of stray dogs were collected in South Derbyshire last year. A total of 188 dogs were picked up by South Derbyshire District Council wardens - double that of previous years.
