Days of Heaven for Live Music and Real Ale Fans
IF you were cheered by the news that Derby's Victoria Inn is to stay open as a rock pub, it may well have elicited fond memories of famous bands who once played The Vic, notably Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro and Kasabian. You could name-check yet more top bands who passed through Derby Wherehouse in the 1990s, including Oasis, Radiohead, Pulp and Garbage. Sadly, the Wherehouse was closed before the 1990s was over.

JANICE was startled by the ringing phone, surprised by the shrill sound in the quiet of midday. Nobody rang her at this time, at least almost nobody. Her friends would ring in the early evening when they had returned home from work. Her family didn't call. She moved to the phone, not running exactly but rushing, afraid that any moment they might ring off. In her hurry she brushed the corner of the coffee table with her thigh and it pitched over the vase of flowers. The lilies had been a prese...

Catering Corps Picture Served Up a Real Treat for Two Readers
A picture showing Ramsden's waiting and kitchen staff in the 1930s proved a delightful surprise for two Bygones readers. Jane Goddard reports. IT'S not often that Bygones gets a response to a story before it has actually appeared in full in the paper. But that's exactly what happened when we published a small picture in our coming-up panel at the bottom of the Bygones page. Sharp-eyed readers Frank Richardson and Kath Snow were quick to contact us when they spotted relatives in the picture of...

Aircraft Which Bombed R-R Was a 217, Not a 215
I WAS interested in a Bygones story printed last month about the bombing of Derby's Rolls-Royce factory on the morning of July 27, 1942. The correspondent went into a lot of interesting detail stating the time the aircraft took off and naming the aircrew.
