I Could Write a Book About This Wonderful Life-Saver

Reading Ivy Ryalls' memories of Derbyshire Royal Infirmary got me thinking how much time I have spent there over the years. It made me realise how much the changes taking place at the old hospital will mean to me.

Dad's Play Days

In the photograph printed in Bygones on April 25 of the LMS body shop coach builders football team from about 1950, the chap third from left on the front is my dad, George Gregory. He was about 16. He remembers Roy Poulter, who sent the picture in. Dad now lives in Cyprus.

Footballing Lads Named

1969

Local: A mystery disease was wiping out thousands of fish in the River Derwent and anglers were being urged to stay away until the cause was discovered. Owen Handley, secretary of Derbyshire County Council Angling Club, said so many dead fish were falling over Ambergate Weir they looked like a curtain. SPORT: A record number of clubs entered Burton and District Sunday League during the season just ending, the most successful in the history of the league.

1979

Local: So many people turned up to Derbyshire County Council's planning committee to hear discussions on the controversial issues of gravel working in the Trent Valley and industrial development at Barlborough that the meeting had to move from its usual room to the council chamber. SPORT: Derby County officials were refusing to comment on reports they were about to sack manager Tommy Docherty and approach Alan Durban to take over the role.

1989

Local: South Derbyshire MP Edwina Currie visited William Allitt School at Newhall to support pupils taking part in a sponsored fast. Thirteen children aged between 12 and 16 were fasting for 24 hours to raise money for famine relief. SPORT: Discussions between Derby County and Steve Cross, whose contract was due to expire during the summer, were continuing to see whether he would stay with the Rams or be put up for sale.
