THE art of valuation and learning about antiques never stops. I often come face-to-face with objects I have never seen before and will frequently inspect works by artists and sculptors I haven't heard of. On a recent visit to a client, I was pleased to inspect a fine array of sculptures worked in stone, fibreglass and wood, which were all signed by Eric Godwin Whyte, who I had not heard of.

A FAMILY has been banned for life from keeping animals after allowing a dog to suffer the "very worst" kind of negligence. The married couple and their son let the highland terrier develop a serious skin condition which led to it losing 85% of its fur.

Speeding offence PAUL Lenin Freeman, 49, of Great Hoggett Drive, Beeston, fined Pounds 45 and licence endorsed with three points for speeding on January 19.

Lead Stolen From Village Hall's Roof

LEAD has been ripped from the roof of a South Derbyshire village hall. Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened at Lullington Village Hall on Thursday.

COLLEAGUES from a Burton travel shop are to do a sponsored walk to help raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. Jane Faulkes, Sarah Mander, Katie Parkes, Tina Batkin, Lindsey Claughin and Craig Mulholland, who all work at Midlands Co-op's Travel Shop on Station Street, will walk from Burton to their Swadlincote branch and back on October 11. They are hoping to raise more than Pounds 300.

I REMEMBER very well the occasion when the German plane appeared at Normanton Recreation Ground during the Second World War. My mother, Jennie, took me to see the fighter aircraft which was on display for everyone to observe. You were able to walk right up the ramp to it and look into the cockpit. Though I was only six years old at the time, I never forgot the experience on that sunny day, 69 years ago.
